How to Fold the Flag

The Flag of the United States of America should be revered and treated in a dignified manner, paying respect to our nation and those who have fought and died for it.

The flag should carefully be folded into quarters and then folded one corner at a time. Each of the 13 folds has a meaning.

		    1. The first fold symbolizes life.
		    2. The second is for our belief in the eternal life.
		    3. The third is in honor and remembrance of our
		       military veterans.
		    4. The fourth is for our weaker nature, knowing we
depend on God's guidance in war and peace.
		    5. The fifth is a tribute to our country.

"Our country, in dealing with other countries,

may she always be right; but it is

still our country, right or wrong."

Stephen Decatur

6. The sixth fold is where our hearts lie: the United States of America and the Republic for which it stands. 7. The seventh is a tribute to our Armed Forces who protect our nation and our flag. 8. The eighth is a tribute to the one who entered the valley of the shadow of death and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day. 9. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for they, through their love and devotion, have molded the character of the men and women who have made this country great. 10. The tenth fold is to honor father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country. 11. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 12. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents eternity and glory to God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 13. The thirteenth and final fold is tucking in the last section. It is held with the stars uppermost to remind us of our nation's motto, "In God We Trust."

The flag, completely folded, has the appearance of a cocked hat,

reminding us of the soldiers who served in the American Revolution

and of today's Armed Forces protecting the freedoms and rights

we enjoy still today.
